The original definition of oneness is going to change a bit here, it is going to be more while remaining “one.” As a fledgling student we are introduced to the myriad things that make karate and a martial art, karate and a martial art. It is about using the “atomistic” to explain the “holistic or whole” that comprises the martial arts. It is human nature to break things down so that our minds can perceive and conceive the complicated that comes from living and is more important when living is about dependence on dealing with conflict and violence - both an integral part of life and living.
More often than I would like the current state of karate and martial arts is about seeing, perceiving and recognizing those more atomistic aspects much like the separateness of principles described herein but in truth oneness is about taking that step across the chasm of mind-state so that we may perceive and understand all the myriad things of karate and martial arts into just one thing, the one thing that is fluid in every moment and toward each instance of any situation. It is bringing all the myriad things into one wholehearted holistic being that makes mastery of karate and martial arts possible.
Yes, we have to know that the sub-principle of “breathing” as a single and separate thing but what challenges us all as karate-ka and martial artists is achieving the ability to bring breathing into a molded and melded form encompassing all other principles to achieve the same mastery.
To reach and achieve that oneness the martial artists must first see, feel and understand that oneness is about atomistic singularity as in the concept of “shu-ha-ri,” where we perform, study and achieve “shu” by being atomistic in our studies and practices. Then we have to let go of the atomistic to make it all work taking us into the “ha” levels of shu-ha-ri.
Like building a list of needs, parts and materials to build a house then beginning to piece the parts together until we reach a complete house we can call a home. One that will protect us from the elements of our environment against the storms that would destroy us alone so that we survive, live and reach oneness.
